I want to introduce us! My name is Heather, and this is my partner and back-up doula, Adrianna. We both have been privileged enough to have been able to practice as a trained professional doulas, now, for about a decade and most of that time we have been very lucky to have known and supported each other in so many ways. In that time, she and I have both learned so much about ourselves, about our own faith, and about the amazing process of pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I myself was a young mother of two when I first got into this field, while Adrianna had not yet met the love of her life at the time, and as for myself, I was deeply inspired to wade into the waters of birth support because of the amazing care I received at the time from my own midwives. While I knew I did not want to be a primary healthcare provider like my midwives were, I soon learned about what it meant to be a non-medical support to birthing and new families by way of becoming a doula. Adrianna had a slightly different journey, and after practicing as a doula for a few years, she applied to and was accepted into the prestigious Midwifery Program at Wilfred Laurier University. She was in year 3 of 4 years, when she unfortunately had to stop due to serious health concerns that transpired very unexpectedly. She took time to take care of herself, fighting breast cancer at the same time as planning her wedding and marrying the man of her dreams at the same time! When she was finally recovered from all of that, she found that she was in a very different place with birth and family plans than midwifery had in store for her. So she returned to a supportive birth role as a back-up doula and we were so lucky to get the chance to work together in this way again! We were both instantly in love with birth work when we got into it. Neither of us have looked back since! However, one thing I did notice as the years and experiences passed by, is that I really wasn't allowing myself to tap into my deepening and core faith that was the really deep down reason why this career called so much to me. And one thing I really felt like I wish I had when I gave birth each time, was a doula who was not afraid to uplift me and support me with a shared faith-based approach. So I decided I was going to become that for others who wanted and needed that. I am still so happy to support from purely an evidence-based perspective, but if you happen to want that extra layer of God-centered uplifting as well, we are both most certainly your girls!
